France came second with 653 points. France scored 174 points for "Penetration into Diversified Markets", 87 points for "Supply Chain Vitality" and "Investment". Spain ranked third with 602 points. China has one of the largest vineyards in the world, while Germany ranks three times higher than 2016.

This macro wine economic report is based on the data of 2016. It shows the strength comparison among different wine producing countries. The publication of this report injects a "heart-warming agent" into the Italian wine industry, which makes people clearly realize that the wine industry is still the backbone of Italian agricultural development.

Italian wines have maintained their leading competitiveness thanks to their strong productivity and rich diversity. The report points out that Italy has maintained its position as the world's top wine producer for several years, thanks to sparkling wines represented by Prosecco. Meanwhile, over the past 20 years, Italy has vigorously advocated the cultivation and revitalization of native grape varieties on the premise of shrinking vineyard areas throughout Europe. More importantly, wine occupies a solid place in the daily consumption of Italians, and the highly developed winery tourism promotes the development of local economy.Although Italian wine exports are still dependent on three major markets - the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom, Italy is the world's second largest wine exporter after Spain in terms of export volume. In terms of export volume, Italy is second only to France, with a number of competitive wine products, high cost-effective, and diversified flavors are favored by the market.

Finally, the report also pointed out that in order to achieve further development of Italian wine, promotion and marketing activities should be strengthened. In the next three years, the Italian wine industry is likely to increase its output value by 30%.
