The last few decades have seen huge changes in the Italian wine industry ... brand new wineries, some of the most modern in Europe have been built, and international grape varieties, Chardonnay, Merlot and so-on, have developed a strong foothold. Where Italy was once synonymous with Marsala and Chianti, many other wines have become household names, with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Pinot Grigio perhaps the best known of all.

Regions we're currently most excited about are Puglia and Sicily, where winemakers are crafting some truly unique wines from ancient varieties. Old-vine treasures such as Primitivo and Nero d'Avola were often sent north to Tuscany to add ?oomph' to expensive local wines yet now enjoy fame in their own right. The white wines of northern Italy, particularly of the Friuli and Piemonte regions, have taken their rightful place among the classics of the world'.

Home to some of the country's richest, most unique wines, southern Italy offers a wealth of exciting grape varieties and sun-ripened flavours. Puglia is the most exciting region, offering a treasure trove of reds and whites that are beaming with personality. Primitivo is the most important grape here, but great wines are also being produced from Negroamaro and Aglianico.

Some tremendous wines are being produced in Sardinia, particularly whites made from Vermentino. However, Sicily is the southern Italian region that's showing the most promise. Famous for its fortified wine Marsala, Sicily is acquiring a reputation for producing good value reds and whites made from Nero d'Avola and Grillo.

No matter what style of wine you fancy, you're guaranteed to find pleasure right here.
